Best Bushes for Fence Line in Clay Soil?

Hey everyone! I have this spot in my backyard that I'd like to make more private and attractive by planting some bushes along my fence. The problem is, my backyard is mostly made up of dense clay, and I'm worried that most plants won't thrive there. I really love Lilacs, but I'm not sure if they'll do well in such conditions. Can anyone suggest some similar bushes that would grow well in clay soil? Thanks a bunch! <3

You might want to consider planting Joy Sedum! It does really well in clay and rocky soil, grows quite large, and produces beautiful white flowers that turn red in the fall. Plus, it attracts all sorts of bees and butterflies, which is a nice bonus!

Before you decide, it’s important to think about what you're looking for. Is it mainly for privacy, looks, or both? Also, knowing your hardiness zone and how much sunlight the area gets daily would really help narrow down the options. Can you share a bit more about that?

Privacy and aesthetics are my goals! No size limits to worry about. I'm in Zone 5b and the area faces north.
