Best Plants for a Dry, Shady Area in a Community Garden?

Hey everyone! I'm involved with a community garden in Denmark, and we're facing a bit of a challenge. We have a few spots that are dry, shady, and honestly, just neglected, as they don't get much water or care. So far, I've transplanted some woodland strawberries and lemon balm since they thrive in other parts of the garden, but I'm looking for more options. What edible plants, especially herbs or berries, could survive and even flourish in those tough conditions?

Consider planting gooseberries if you can figure out the local name for them! They grow wild in my area, need very little care once established, and can handle full shade. Plus, they make tasty pies or jams when harvested right. Just a heads up, they have thorns, so wear gloves! They're pretty tough and should do well in those neglected areas.

Thanks! We tried them in another neglected spot, but they struggled there too, haha. Since this area is even tougher, I guess they might not be the best fit.

Ferns are really great for those shady spots and tend to thrive even when ignored. You might want to look into some edible varieties as well; it could be a win-win!

Do you know if any of the edible ferns would work there? I'm curious!

If you're looking for something that can handle neglect and low light, I highly recommend the Cast Iron plant. It's super hardy and does well in shady spots without much care. It's been a favorite of mine for a long time!

Thanks for the suggestion! That's a new one for me.
