What to Do When Kitchen Cabinets Ordered Don’t Fit?

I'm in the middle of a kitchen remodel and ran into an issue with the cabinets we ordered. We originally requested the removal of soffits, but it turns out there's a structural beam in one of them that can't be removed. The contractor assured us there wouldn't be a problem when we placed the order with the kitchen company, but now it seems there's a miscommunication. Should we get the cabinets reordered or consider modifying what we already have? I'm also wary about them shortening the cabinets that are already on the way.

You might have some options here! One suggestion could be to shift the beam upward and then use joist hangers for the joists instead of having them rest directly on the beam. This could give you the clearance you need without a full redo of your cabinets.

Honestly, it sounds like the contractor may have dropped the ball by not properly inspecting the soffits beforehand. You should definitely discuss this with them, as it seems like a big oversight. If multiple contractors were involved and none mentioned this would be a problem, that definitely raises some red flags.
