Why Won’t My Block Plane Cut?

Asked By CraftySquirrel92 On

I've been struggling with my block plane and can't seem to make it work after trying three different ones. No matter how I position it or how much force I use, I can't get it to shave or even chip wood. I even managed to pry out a splinter once with a rubber hammer, but that's about it. Is there a technique I'm missing, or is it simply an issue with strength?

First off, make sure the blade is sharp! It sounds like your cutting depth might be too much as well. Start with the blade retracted and then adjust it bit by bit until it starts taking shavings. You want to go for very fine cuts rather than trying to remove a chunk all at once.

From what you described, it seems like both sharpening and proper adjustment are essential. A properly sharpened block plane can glide through wood easily with minimal effort, so if you're bearing down with full force and still struggling, that’s a sign that something’s off. Try adjusting the blade depth gently and make sure the blade is sharpened correctly. Also, check the grain direction when you’re planing; it can make a huge difference.

Yeah, and remember to keep your hands light on the plane. It's all about finesse rather than brute strength. If it’s not cutting at all, you might even need to verify that the bevel is facing the right direction!
