Hey everyone! I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed and could really use your input. I'm planning to build some cabinets and want to use box joints, so I'm in the market for a router and table setup. I'm looking for something that will help me make dados and box joints easily with jigs. The router can be corded as this setup will mostly stay on the table. I'm okay with either a freestanding or benchtop table. I know I'll need the router, the table, and bits (including special ones for plywood dados). Are there any additional accessories I should consider? My budget is around $500, but I can stretch it a bit if it's worth it. Also, if you think a table saw would be better for this, I'm open to those recommendations too. Let me know what you think!

I really enjoy my router table, but honestly, for making dados, a table saw is often the best way to go. For box joint jigs, you can either buy or build them for the table saw or router table. Just a heads up, if you go the router route, a good and stable fence is critical for accuracy.
I highly recommend the Dewalt corded router (DW6184). It comes as a kit with three bases: a fixed base, a plunge base, and a D-handle base. I'm planning to set up a new router table soon and am looking into which insert to use, but keep in mind that ones with lifts can get pricey.
For a router, I suggest the Bosch 1617EVS. I got one refurbished for about $140 with both fixed and plunge bases. It's a solid router, plus you can often find it on sale. Just make sure it can handle both 1/4" and 1/2" bits for versatility. For dados, you’ll need a good setup—either a good fence or a straight edge can work well depending on the dado. Also, I recommend looking into quality router bits from brands like Freud or Whiteside; they really make a difference. Don't forget to take care of them for longevity!

Thanks, this is super helpful! And also makes me feel better -- the Bosch 1617EVS is exactly the one I was looking at!
