Need Help with Mother-in-Law’s Furniture Project

Hey everyone! My mother-in-law has asked me to build a bedside table, and I'm feeling a bit unsure about how to tackle one particular aspect. After checking out the design she likes (link included), I have concerns about the back of the table, especially regarding wood expansion. I can manage the other sides since I can orient them for uniform expansion and contraction, but I'm not sure how to handle the back. Any tips on construction methods or approaches? By the way, the glass piece doesn't need to be removable, so feel free to ignore that part if it's not relevant!

Good thoughts there! Since the table is small, the wood movement might not be a big issue. I suggest drilling slightly larger holes for the back and using washers or large-headed screws to secure it, which would allow for some movement without any problems.

That back piece is likely made of veneered plywood, which should handle expansion just fine. The grain orientation of the top rail won't cause you any troubles either, so no need to stress too much over that!

Just a heads up, for a price tag of $400, it’s pretty likely that the ‘solid walnut’ is more of a veneer over cheaper wood. I’d say it's not worth your time and materials to try and replicate something that affordable. Maybe just buy something similar instead! You’ll save yourself some headaches.
