How can I turn a cement hole in my yard into a water feature?

I've got a challenging situation in my backyard. The previous owners tried to create a pond but ended up digging a hole about 18 inches deep, lining it with rock and cement, then placing a rubber liner, which quickly ripped due to the rough surfaces. Now, I just have an empty hole. I'm considering two options: hiring a landscaping company to remove everything or attempting to seal it with some sort of rubber paint. I'm leaning towards the cheaper and more aesthetic option, so if anyone has any suggestions or products that could help, I would really appreciate it!

When we faced a similar situation with a koi pond, I just went in with a sledgehammer for a few weekends until I broke it all apart. It cost nothing but my time, and it felt great to release some stress. After that, hauling away the concrete chunks was pretty cheap, and I ended up planting a lovely flowering shrub instead. Overall, I spent under $100!

If you're set on making it a water feature, I'd recommend removing everything. You can't put a pond on a bad foundation! Check out some videos online for guidance on soil prep and base creation before diving into any DIY project. It can be super informative and save you from potential mistakes.

Honestly, you might want to just fill it with dirt and plant some grass over it. Those water features can be a lot of work to maintain and can turn into a headache. Instead, maybe plant a nice medium-sized tree that will bloom in the spring. You’ll probably enjoy that more in the long run!

Totally agree! I’ve got a tree like that in my yard, and it's just so beautiful when it blooms. Way less hassle too!
