Do I Need to Remove the Grass Before Building My Elevated Deck?

Hey everyone! I'm working on constructing an elevated deck that's going to be about 6 feet high in my backyard. I'm trying to decide whether I should remove the grass underneath or just lay down a weed barrier and a thick layer of gravel and stones right over it. What do you all think?

Removing the grass could be beneficial, especially if you want a solid foundation and to prevent any unwanted growth later on. Grass tends to die off in such conditions, but if you’re inclined, using something like Roundup to kill it first can make the process smoother.

If you're asking about the grass, it probably won't survive under the weight of the deck, weed barrier, and gravel. So if you’re not too concerned about being eco-friendly with the grass, just layering it all on top can work. Just make sure everything’s leveled out for good drainage before putting down the gravel.

It ultimately depends on your deck's foundation. If you're using something like precast concrete piles, the grass won't matter as much since light and water can still get through. That said, make sure your setup is leveled for proper drainage.
