What Pests Might Be Eating My Onions?

I'm growing onions for the first time in zone 5b, and after hardening off my healthy onion starts for a few weeks, I planted them this past weekend. However, just two days after putting them outside, it seems like almost all of them have been eaten down to ground level! I'm really upset and confused. I thought onions repel most pests, but I do have squirrels and rabbits in my garden. Do either of these animals eat onions? What's going on here?

Sounds like it might be slugs! They tend to enjoy munching on onions more than you'd think. Maybe check around at night or early morning to see if you can spot them in action.

I hear you! While rabbits typically don't eat onions, I had a one-eyed rabbit that surprisingly went after my shallot greens last year. They can be unpredictable, so keep an eye out!

That’s wild! I've seen rabbits pass on carrots but go straight for onions. Plus, birds might be sneaking a snack too!
