Are HVAC Rebates for Tax Credits Legit?

Asked By CoolBreezeFl0w93 On

I recently got a quote for a Rheem R96TA070 furnace (96% efficiency) and a Bosch BOVA-36 heat pump. My installer didn't mention anything about rebates, but I just discovered I might qualify for around $2,205 back from federal tax credits (thanks to the IRA, Section 25C). Is this actually a legitimate thing? Has anyone here gone through the process of claiming it? Do I need an AHRI certificate or anything unusual for filing? And is it straightforward during tax season or a total pain? Just trying to get my facts straight before I reach out to the company.

Hey! I’m an HVAC contractor, and I can tell you these credits are definitely legit. I always inform my clients about them and even provide the documentation needed for the filing process. Just make sure that the system meets the efficiency standards for SEER2 and EER ratings. The filing isn’t hard at all; you’ll need the invoice from your installer with the model and serial numbers, and if they don’t give you the AHRI certificate, you can get it yourself by checking the model numbers on the AHRI site. Just a heads up, it's a tax credit, not a rebate, which means it reduces your tax liability rather than adding to your refund. It sounds complicated, but it’s actually pretty straightforward for those who qualify!

Thanks for the info! I usually owe money on taxes, so I adjusted my W4 and expect a refund next year. Good to know that this credit won’t bump it up!

Just to clarify, while a credit won’t push your federal taxes owed below zero, it does indeed add to your refund if you’re getting one.

Absolutely, it’s legit! I had new HVAC installed last year, filed for my taxes this year, and it worked like a charm. The process was super easy and I was really happy with the credit I received.

We installed the Bosch heat pump last year and I received a federal tax credit of $2,000. Plus, my energy company also chipped in a $3,800 rebate! It’s worth looking into for sure.

You can find more about the credits by just Googling it! There’s also a helpful resource at energystar.gov if you need more information about federal tax credits.

How much are you all paying for a new furnace and AC system? My AC broke last year, and my furnace is over 20 years old, so I’m thinking about replacing both. I’m in Seattle and heat pumps are pretty efficient here.

Expect to pay anywhere between $7,000 to $9,500 for both installed!
