I'm new to growing zinnias and want to dive into it this season in southern Virginia (zone 7b). I'm starting from seeds and looking for any tips or tricks to ensure they thrive and keep blooming throughout the season. It's pretty rare to see others grow them around here, and I can't find them in local garden stores when they're in season. I'd really appreciate any advice you can share!

Zinnias prefer drier conditions—just a heads up, they can develop powdery mildew if overwatered. I recommend watering at the base of the plants instead of overhead to prevent this. And remember, though mildew can be a nuisance, it doesn't usually harm the plants too much, and they will still keep blooming! You'll attract bees and butterflies, so it’s totally worth it!
That’s great to know! I had a similar situation with my plants last season; they got mildew too, but they still looked beautiful! Good trick about watering at the base!
If rabbits are a problem in your area, it's important to protect your young zinnias. They'll happily munch on them! I usually put up chicken wire around my plants until they’re established, or sometimes I just pot them in taller containers which the rabbits can’t reach.
That’s a smart idea! I have some rabbits around, so I'll definitely consider that.
Good tip! I’ve had a similar issue with pests. Sounds like rabbit-proofing is key!
Make sure you leave some of the zinnia flowers on the plant, as birds like goldfinches love the seeds! This will not only help the local wildlife but also encourage more blooms in your garden.

I totally agree! I’ve seen that with my other plants too. Glad it doesn’t affect the blooms much!
