I'm trying to cut some curved shapes around the edges of a 5x5 sheet of plywood for a floor piece in the back of my mini van. The design will fit around the rear seat well, and I'll use the cut-off piece as a hinged cover for trunk space. The final size will be approximately 54x48 inches. I'm considering using a jigsaw, but I also have access to a very old scroll saw that was built by my great-grandfather. I want to know if the scroll saw is feasible for this size cut and if it can handle curved lines accurately after I template the edges with cardboard. Honestly, a jigsaw is going to be your best bet for this project. The scroll saw isn't ideal for larger pieces—you'll be quite far away from the cutting blade, which makes it tricky to maneuver accurately. For cutting 3/8" plywood, try using a metal cutting jigsaw blade with fine teeth; it gives a smoother finish and reduces splintering. Just remember to cut slowly, especially on tighter curves, to avoid pushing too hard and having the blade drift. And always change the blade with the power off!
