I'm on the hunt for a charge controller that can handle 12V batteries and is compatible with solar panels that produce 53+ volts. Ideally, I'm looking for something that can manage 100 amps, as I'll be using large panels—specifically 580 watts each. I also want to make sure it can work with my LiFePO4 batteries. You should look into getting an MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) charge controller. These are great for converting high voltage and low amperage to a lower voltage with higher amperage, which is perfect for your setup. For instance, a Victron 150|50 would work well; it has a voltage input limit of 150V and can output around 50 amps, suitable for a system like yours. Just be cautious not to exceed the voltage limit; the controller won’t pull excess watts, so that’s fine!
If you're considering options, I’d recommend checking out the Victron products. You can also do a bit of tinkering with your panel configuration. For instance, using two Victron Smart Solar 100/50 controllers could work well. You’d just need to wire your panels into two separate strings in parallel. Victron even offers a calculator on their website to help you figure out the best setup for your specific panel specs!
Remember, the difference between your battery voltage (12V) and panel voltage (53+ V) can make finding a controller a bit tricky, and some may be pricey. If you have a lot of power needs, consider switching to 48V batteries instead. This could allow you to get more power with fewer components. I personally switched from 12V to 48V and use a Renogy 60 amp controller along with a 3500W inverter/controller combo. It greatly expanded my capacity!
