I planted some tomato seeds in peat pots about three weeks ago, but I'm worried because they haven't sprouted yet. I make sure to check the water levels daily and they get a few hours of sunlight, but it's been really cold at night and the room isn't insulated. I don't want to keep them indoors since I have cats that might mess with them. I'm also thinking about planting a couple more today just to be safe, and I'm located in the Chicago area. Any advice?

Tomato seeds usually need a warm environment (around 70 to 80°F) to germinate. If you're worried about the cats getting into your pots, consider covering them with a plastic cup or even a large glass jar. Just a heads up, my cats don't show much interest in tomatoes, so it might not be a problem! Also, if those seeds don’t sprout, don’t hesitate to plant some extras.
Generally, tomato seeds should take around 3 to 7 days to sprout. Since yours haven't sprouted after three weeks, you might want to reconsider the peat pots. They tend to hold too much water, which can be an issue. Make sure your soil is damp but not soaked, and don’t let it dry out completely!
Have you thought about using a heat mat? That could really help your seeds germinate faster. Also, make sure they’re getting sufficient light if you're starting them indoors. It can make a huge difference!
