I'm looking for suggestions on compact, flowering shrubs that thrive in a cold zone like the Pacific Northwest (zone 5). We've already tried azaleas, but we need something that's not too messy or fussy. While rhododendrons, hydrangeas, and lilacs have worked well, the owner is looking for something smaller and evergreen if possible. Anyone have ideas?

Finding a compact flowering shrub in zone 5 that isn't a rhododendron is tough! If you're open to deciduous options, there might be more variety available. Conifers could work too, but they can get pricey, especially for larger specimens. Just a heads up!
Yeah, the owner wants flowers, not just leaves. I was thinking of bay laurel, but it turns out he already has some. It's tricky finding something with at least decent blooms without the mess!
