I'm working on putting in a flagstone patio and want to add a small block wall around it. Initially, I planned to lay the flagstone first and then build the wall on top. However, I've realized that the flagstone won't be sturdy enough to support the wall without cracking, especially since people will be sitting on it. So, I'm wondering whether it's better to build the wall first. I think it might make leveling easier, and I could use sand to set the flagstone later on. I'll also be using polymeric sand for the joints between the flagstones and the wall. What do you all think?

Yeah, I’d definitely recommend putting the wall up first! It will help contain the materials and give you a solid edge for the flagstone. Plus, you need to make sure the first course of the wall is properly set below grade for structural support.
I agree about the wall going in first. If you tie the flagstone to the wall, any shifting can mess up the alignment and could lead to more work later if it needs leveling. Unless your patio has unusual curves, the wall should be your first step!

Makes total sense. Thanks!
