Advice on Setting Up Solar Power for My Irrigation Pump

I'm hoping to switch my garden irrigation setup from a gas pump to a solar-powered one. I need a pump that can handle a minimum of 2000 gallons per hour, and I've calculated that I'll need around a 1000-watt solar system for this. However, I'm not sure how to proceed from here. Specifically, I need an inverter that can withstand outdoor conditions, or tips on building a protective enclosure for it. I only plan to run the pump for about an hour every day or every other day. I've seen pre-made systems priced between $2,000 and $5,000, but I think I could piece something together for less with five 200-watt panels. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I think you're right to consider the panels, but don't expect to get the full 200 watts from each one all the time—especially on cloudy days. It might be better to set up a battery bank that charges from the solar panels. This way, the pump runs off the stored battery power, and you can gradually add more panels if needed to charge the battery faster. It gives you more flexibility!

Consider looking into 12 or 24-volt bilge or well pumps instead. They can handle high flow rates and eliminate the need for an inverter, which makes your system more efficient. Just pair it with an MPPT controller, and you should be good to go!

Have you thought about why you need to run such a powerful pump for just one hour? You might actually get away with using smaller pumps that could run longer—maybe two hours instead. It could save you money and energy!

You raised a valid point! I could split my irrigation system into smaller zones, but I need to ensure the pump can handle the 35-foot incline, and I already have everything set for a 2-inch diameter pump. Any smaller just won’t work with my setup.
