Understanding Series Wiring for Solar Panels: Amperage Confusion

Hey everyone, I'm new to this solar panel setup and I have a question about wiring them in series. I just bought four 440W panels, and I'm a bit confused. When I connect them in series, my multimeter shows the amperage increases, which contradicts my understanding that in series, the amps should stay the same. Even when I measure just one panel in full sunlight, it only reads about 4 amps instead of the 13 amps it's supposed to. I've tried using two different multimeters to double-check. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks a lot!

Make sure your panels are positioned right – they need direct sunlight with no shadows to perform at their best. If you're checking with a voltmeter, be careful since it can short out your panels, especially in high voltages from a series. Just letting you know: usually, the amps you're measuring will be limited by the underperforming panel. Keep testing, but attention to orientation is crucial!

Oh no, I wasn't aware of that! I did connect them in series and tested volts and amps, but some panels were shaded. Did I damage them? Thanks for all your help!

When you have multiple panels in series, they'll only output the maximum amps when they're under optimal conditions – think full sunlight, no shade, and perfect temperature. The volts are cumulative, but the amps will depend on the weakest link in your series. If even one panel isn't getting ideal light, it’ll drag down the overall output.

It sounds like you're measuring your panels while they’re connected to a charge controller, right? When wiring in series, remember that the voltage adds up, but the amperage remains the same. If you're measuring while connected and there's a load, it might mess with your readings. Make sure to check connections when measuring without a load.

Oh, is that why? I'm just putting the panels in the sun in series and measuring at the ends without any load. Should I connect them in a different way?
