I recently constructed a 10x30 lean-to attached to my garage using pressure-treated 4x4s. I buried the posts 36 inches deep with gravel at the base, packing it with dirt instead of using concrete. The framing went well, and I used long timber screws for a solid finish. Now I'm second-guessing my decision not to use concrete—while it's level and stable so far, I'm concerned it might lean in the future. Has anyone else built something similar? I'd love to hear your experiences and any maintenance tips!

It's all about drainage. Any posts in the ground can rot eventually, so make sure the area drains well away from them. A good idea is to add a sealant to protect against moisture. With your gravel base and sloping, you should be set for many years ahead!
Honestly, if you're 36 inches deep, you're probably good for a long time! Just focus on making sure water doesn’t sit around your posts. They might eventually rot, but not for many years. You could always place some French drains nearby to be safe!
Great tip! I haven’t considered French drains, but it seems a solid option. Thanks for the suggestion!
From what I've seen, buried posts can struggle with rot over time, especially if water saturates the ground. That said, since yours is 36 inches deep and built well, it should hold up for a while! If you do start seeing signs of decay, you can always jack it up and replace the posts later. It’s a hassle, but it’s been done with decks and similar builds. Just keep an eye on it and the drainage around the area!
Makes sense! I’ve had similar experiences with my own builds. Keeping the drainage managed sure helps.

I appreciate it! I’ll definitely consider a sealant. It’s good to know the gravel and slope help a lot.
