Where to Buy Wood for Beginners in NYC and Long Island?

Hey everyone! I'm new to woodworking and just starting out with some small projects like frames, coasters, and inlays. I'm a bit intimidated about where to buy wood in the NYC/Long Island area. I've seen some lumber lists online, but I'm particularly looking for places that are welcoming to beginners and don't require big purchases. I'm even willing to hop over to New Jersey if needed! Plus, it would be great if I could find a spot that offers cutting services to help with sizing the boards for my vehicle. Any recommendations?

You might want to check out big box stores like Lowe’s or Menards. They usually have a good selection of affordable dimensional softwoods. Also, look into Habitat for Humanity ReStores and local thrift stores for cheap furniture you can repurpose—sometimes they even have lumber! Don't forget about estate sales; woodworkers often leave behind some nice pieces. You could even ask local cabinetmakers; they might have scraps or cheap options available. It’s also useful to search here for suggestions on inexpensive wood since this topic pops up often!

Not an expert in your area, but I’d recommend checking out Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist. I used Craigslist a ton before I found a dedicated lumberyard nearby. Regarding cutting your boards—are you looking for specific sizes or just something that fits your car? It’s tough to find places that will cut to exact dimensions without charging a lot, but I can understand needing help to fit things in!

I just need something manageable to fit in my car, nothing too precise!
