What Should I Do About a Diesel Spill on My Driveway?

So, I recently had some gravel delivered, and while backing up, the trucking company accidentally punctured their gas tank on a rock. They ended up leaving a trail of diesel all over my asphalt driveway. I'm really concerned about the fire risk and environmental hazards, but I'm also curious about how this might affect the asphalt itself. Do I need to take any special steps to clean it up? Is there a chance the diesel will damage my driveway even after they address the spill? Any advice on what actions I should consider?

Hey there! You should definitely report the spill to your state environmental agency, especially if it’s a significant amount. They'll get a case officer involved, and you might have to hire an environmental consultant to manage the cleanup. It's also worth trying to get the trucking company to cover those costs. Until then, try not to ignore it as it could lead to further issues down the road. Just make sure the spill stays contained if possible!

Absolutely! If you find it's a big spill, definitely call a certified cleanup crew. Many trucking companies have insurance people for cleanup situations like this.

In my state, it's not necessary to report unless it’s more than 25 gallons, so check your local regulations first. Sometimes the spills seem worse than they actually are.

It might also be a good idea to follow up with the trucking company directly. They should take responsibility for the cleanup. Just don’t forget to save any evidence and photos of the spill just in case—it’ll help if they try to brush it off.

When cleaning up diesel, the key is to soak up as much as you can with something like kitty litter or rags, and then wash it away with a degreaser, like Simple Green or dish soap. Diesel isn’t super flammable, but you should still act quickly to get it off your driveway before it can cause damage. And yes, diesel can break down asphalt over time, so you want to clean it as soon as possible!

Exactly! You don't want it sitting there too long. A quick cleanup might save you from a bigger headache later.

I’ve had success with a mix of Dawn dish soap and water for oil and grease—give that a try!
