Best Affordable Squares for Accurate Measurements

I'm on the hunt for budget-friendly squares that are genuinely 90 degrees. I would love to get my hands on a Woodpeckers model, but the price just doesn't make sense for me right now. Any suggestions?

You might want to start with a cheaper square and look up some tutorials on how to true a square. There are lots of guides available that will show you how to check and fix them. Typically, you'll need to tap them in certain spots with a punch and hammer for framing squares, or make minor adjustments to a locking mechanism on combination squares. It's a good idea to understand these processes before buying, so you'll know how to pick one that’s already pretty accurate.

Check out Taylor Woodworking! Their 'Blemished' section can have some great deals on high-quality PEC squares that won't break the bank. These are often as good as brands like Starrett and Woodpeckers, with flaws that don’t affect their functionality. You can also find decent iGaging squares there. For machinist squares, Amazon can be a solid option too—just make sure to read the reviews. I usually find that squares from big box stores are alright, but be cautious with combination squares; their speed squares are usually reliable, though!

I've had good luck with inexpensive machinist squares. I also picked up a Japanese square from Rockler that turned out to be really accurate after I cleaned up a little damage from a drop. If you're feeling adventurous, making your own try square can be an enjoyable way to nail down precision skills too!

Making your own is a great idea! Plus, it’s a fun project that can help you understand how to achieve accuracy in your future work.
