Best Materials for Bending Wood on a 24″ Radius?

I'm crafting a small round platform for my son's wedding, and I'm looking for advice on the best materials to bend around a 24" radius. The platform is about 6" high, and I want to cover it with a rigid material that I can paint. Ideally, I would like to minimize seams, so I'm considering cutting 6" strips lengthwise that are around 75" long. I've heard bending across the grain with plywood can be tricky, and while I'm aware of the kerf method, I'm not entirely sure how effective it is in this situation. I'm also thinking that 1/8" MDF might work without requiring kerfs. Any insights on what materials are best for bending around this radius?

I've built projects like this professionally and can tell you that you can either go with 'bender board' or 'wiggle wood', which are designed for flexibility. If you're using thinner materials like 1/8" MDF, I'd recommend layering two strips and gluing them together for strength. Make sure you have some vertical supports that follow the 24" radius to secure everything well, and consider clamping with ratchet straps while it dries to keep it in shape. Just a heads up, adding a topper later on can help protect the edges from wear.

You might want to check out bender board! It's made from plywood that has all the grain oriented the same way, which makes it a great choice for curved surfaces like yours. Kerf cutting the back of some 1/2" plywood could also work for bending it easily. Just a thought!

Consider using Masonite or tempered hardboard. It's smooth and bends quite easily. If you find it’s not bending as you hoped, you can warm it up with a heat gun. It’s affordable and paints really well, just be mindful that it’s not super durable but should be fine for your use if supports are in place.
