I'm looking to hang string lights over my patio but I'm facing some challenges. I used to have a steel guide wire anchored to a tree and the house for support, but since the tree is no longer an option, I need a new solution. I bought a 9ft pole and placed it in a 60lb umbrella base to test this method I keep seeing online where the lights are hung from a pole in a planter. However, I can't figure out how to keep the pole from tipping over when I pull the lights tight enough to stay above 6ft at the center. I've even added 2 bags of sand to the base, bringing it to over 100lbs, but it still falls over. Is the span of about 25ft too large? Should the lights really dip down like that? Are the pictures I see online a bit unrealistic? Do I just need a heavier base? I'd love to hear how others are setting up their patio string lights. Thanks!

You might want to try a different anchoring method altogether. I've used a home depot bucket filled with concrete to secure a pole; just center the pole in the mix and you can even disguise it with some decorative surrounds. Works great!
One great option is to use a large decorative planter and fill it partially with concrete to really anchor your pole. You can also add some plantings on top for a nicer look! That way, it should hold up better.
Have you thought about adding a guy rope to a stake on the opposite side? It can help give that extra support you might need to keep everything stable!
A good tip is to use rebar that fits tightly into metal conduit. Drive the rebar 4' into the ground, leaving some height for the pole, and then slide the conduit over it. You can also add a guide wire for added support if needed!
Yeah, levers gonna lever! Just be cautious with the tension you're putting on the lights. Sometimes, a little dip can add charm!
