I'm looking to brighten up a couple of dark rooms in my house by adding some small windows to an exterior wall. I thought a window installation company could handle this, but they told me to hire a general contractor first. Is it necessary to go through a GC for this kind of job in California, or can a window company handle it?

Yeah, you definitely need a general contractor for this type of work. Since you’re cutting into the wall, they’ll need to install headers and do some structural work. Plus, once the windows are in, you'll have some siding and drywall repairs to deal with. That’s more than a window company usually does!

Thanks for clarifying! It just surprises me that they don’t offer any recommendations for contractors they work with. Dealing with multiple companies can be such a hassle.
