How Do I Stop My Gouge from Slipping While Carving?

Hey everyone! I've been carving high relief faces for about six months now, and I've picked up quite a bit along the way. However, when I get to the fine details, like the eyes, my gouge sometimes slips and leaves gashes across my work. Any tips on how to prevent this? Could it be because my gouge is too sharp or too dull? Or might it be a technique issue? Thanks a lot for your help!

I think technique is key here. While tool issues can play a part, different carvers use various techniques for better control. There's a good discussion on tool control techniques that might help you out - check out this link: [Tool Control Techniques](https://forum.woodcarvingillustrated.com/forum/woodcarving-illustrated/woodcarving/wood-carving-for-beginners/2725-how-do-you-use-gauges-v-tools). When I run into this problem, I use a small mallet and tap gently instead of pushing with my hands. That way, if the gouge slips, it stops right away instead of carving deeper. Just be careful, sometimes you might see small hit marks if you're not steady enough.

This makes a lot of sense! I usually push by hand, which probably causes more slipping. I'll definitely try the mallet method!

Your gouge might be too dull, which can make you push harder, causing it to slip and cut through. Also, consider the angle you sharpen your gouge at; it could be too obtuse, making it feel dull and affecting your control.
