I recently noticed that my partner planted basil in between my established square foot tomato plants, about eight inches apart. I'm curious if the roots will compete too aggressively or if it'll be fine. Anyone have experience with this?

You should be good! That's pretty much how I plant mine too. As the tomato plants grow taller, they'll provide some shade to the basil, but it's nothing to worry about.
No worries at all! Basil and tomatoes are classic companions in the garden. Basil won’t outcompete the tomatoes, and it actually enjoys a bit of shade.
I've always planted basil alongside my tomatoes, whether in containers or in the ground. They're a perfect match – the basil doesn't hog nutrients, can fit into tight spots, and even helps deter pests! Just keep an eye out for potential leaf diseases, especially in humid weather.
