Hey everyone! I recently came across insect houses at my local garden center. They're similar to birdhouses but are designed with various tubes and compartments for insects to shelter and lay eggs. I'm curious if anyone has tried using these insect houses and what your experiences have been! Are they effective or just a gimmick?

Honestly, I think insect houses can be okay, but they might not always be the best option. Some bee houses have incorrect sizes, which can lead to wasps moving in instead. I prefer leaving plant stems and creating a messy corner in my yard for bees and butterflies—it's free and works just as well! Plus, I found a bunch of native bees this year, including a massive bumblebee!
In my experience here in Austria, insect houses actually work well for smaller bees and wasps. I can see that mine are being used since some of the tubes are already plugged with larvae/pupae. They can definitely be handy!
That's exactly why I want one! It would be awesome to observe insects up close and see what they're up to.
I think insect houses can be somewhat gimmicky. If you have the right space, natural habitats are generally much better for insects. But hey, they do serve as a good starter option if you're just beginning to attract them!
I have plenty of shrubs and trees in my yard, so I never thought I'd need one either. But it could be fun to check out what's actually living there!
Bumblebees are the best! They're so gentle. I once leaned in to watch one on my rhododendron and it looked like it actually dozed off for a moment before getting back to work!
