Before picking a saw, think about what you'll be making. If you're not sure yet, maybe a bench top could work, especially for projects like Adirondack chairs or cabinets. They’re great for long, accurate cuts and super portable, but just remember, they might struggle with deeper cuts depending on the wood. I have a Rikon 10-3061 and while it has its quirks, like the fence not being stable, it's perfect for ripping stock!
I have a bench top band saw too. It’s compact and I love that it’s budget-friendly and easy to move. Just a couple downsides: it doesn’t handle depth well for resawing, so if you want to make deeper cuts, you might need a full-size model eventually. Blade changes can be a pain for tighter curves, but overall, I'm happy with my setup!
If you're in the UK, Axminster has some good hobbyist band saws. I use one that's slightly bigger than a bench top model, and I attached it on top of an office drawer pedestal—works great for me! Just a heads up, though, it doesn't have the cutting depth I wish it did for some of my projects but otherwise, it's been a solid choice.
