We're repainting our 1949 Colonial Revival house this spring and have noticed something odd about the shutters. The front windows have nonfunctional shutters that look too good to be original replacements. However, the side and back windows don't have any shutters at all. Some likely never had them due to their different styles, like a large picture window and French doors. But there are side sash windows similar to the front ones without shutters. Is this the norm, or could the previous owner have skimped on the shutters? Should we consider adding shutters to the other sash windows for a cohesive look?

Typically, functional shutters are placed on the sides of the house that might face storms or strong winds. Non-functional ones are mainly for style, which is why they usually appear only on the front. It’s quite rare to have them on the back or sides unless there’s a street or a corner view. People often focus on decorating the part of the house that’s visible to others, just like how front doors look nicer than back doors.
It’s really just up to you! I mean, who’s even looking at the side or back windows? Will adding shutters there make a noticeable difference? It's more about your personal preference and how you want the exterior to look.
