What are Some Affordable Alternatives to Heating Pumps for Cooling My Home?

I live in a 1980s ranch-style house that heats with oil and doesn't have central air. My mostly finished basement stays cool and low in humidity during summer, and it opens directly into my kitchen and living area. I'm looking for ways to pull that cool air from the basement into the main part of the house. Heating pumps are out of my budget right now, and I'm not keen on window units due to their high electricity costs. What are some cost-effective methods, like using fans, to enhance airflow and cool the house?

There are plenty of ways to get that cool air circulating! Your best bet is to find spots in your home where air can flow easily from the basement to the rest of the house. Consider a whole house fan or powered register boosters to help with airflow. The key is creating a good circuit for the air to travel. Just ensure you’ve got two well-connected spots for the air to flow through.

Attic fans can be a great solution for circulating air! Just make sure you have enough ventilation space in your attic for them to work effectively. Each fan will have a recommended square footage that it can handle, so check the specs before you buy one.

Location can influence your options. Depending on where you live, have you considered evaporative coolers or mini-split systems? They can be quite efficient for cooling without breaking the bank.
