I'm looking to buy my first hand plane and I've heard that a No. 5 might be a solid choice. However, I'd love to get some more opinions and insights on this to help me make the right decision!

While a No. 5 is a solid option, if you're looking for something a bit more robust, consider the No. 5 1/2. They can be pricier and a bit harder to track down, but I started with a No. 5, and it's been my go-to for just about everything!

Before you decide, think about what you'll mainly use the plane for. If you need it for flattening boards before using an electric sander, you might need a different type than if you're just finishing surfaces or tackling end grain. Each type has its strengths!

That's a great point! I suppose I should consider my specific projects.

I would definitely recommend getting a vintage No. 5. They're pretty easy to find and usually come at a good price. Plus, they're versatile for all sorts of tasks!
