I just became the owner of a 500 lb propane tank that came with my property, and it's not looking too great. It has some paint chips and what seems to be surface rust (dark brown spots). I'm not very experienced with this, so I'm wondering at what point I should really worry about replacing it. If it's just surface rust, is there any way I can maintain it to extend its lifespan? Would repainting be a good idea?

Definitely a solid question! Just remember that while the outside can show signs of wear, what’s on the inside matters even more. Keep an eye on both!
If the rust is just on the surface, you can spray those areas with a rust neutralizer and then paint over the whole tank to protect it further.
It’s important to know if this tank is yours or if you lease it from a supplier. Most people don’t actually own their tanks. If it’s yours and just surface rust, consider lightly sanding, priming, and repainting.
