I'm planning to build a DIY elevated cat bowl stand since I haven't found any that meet my needs. I'm curious about the best type of wood to use that won't easily stain or degrade over time. I want this to last! I'm using 6.1 inch bowls and have a 6-inch hole saw drill bit ready to go. I'll sand the cut edges for a smooth finish and will attach the side legs to the flat bowl mount with nails or screws. Any other suggestions or tips for this project would be great too!

You're overthinking a bit! It doesn't have to be an heirloom piece. Oak or maple are solid choices, but if you're looking for something more cost-effective, pine works too—just make sure to seal it well with something moisture-resistant like poly or epoxy.
Cats are way cleaner than my dog! If it helps, marine ply with spar would hold up great. I’d stick with budget-friendly options like pine though.
You might try poplar, then prime and paint it. A durable paint like Emerald Urethane can really withstand spills and last a long time.
Consider using teak or cypress for good durability.
