I'm trying to understand the solar and battery capacity required to run an off-grid pond aeration pump continuously. My calculations suggest I'll need at least 3kW of solar panels and over 16kWh of battery storage, which seems way too high for a single 550W air pump. Just to give you a reference, this pump seems to consume about 25% of the total energy my large house and climate-controlled detached building use, which doesn't make sense to me. So, just to throw this out there, you probably don’t need to run your aeration pump full-time every day. The average aeration time is usually about 12 hours a day for larger bodies of water. If you set up your system to run only during daylight hours, you could really reduce the battery storage and solar array size without compromising on effectiveness.
Your calculations might be a bit off! If you're running a 550W pump non-stop, that's around 13.2 kWh daily. A 3kW solar setup could produce around 15kWh on ideal days, translating to about 13kWh after losses with the inverter. But, you’d want to factor in additional capacity for those days when you might not get perfect sun. You might need to adjust your estimates up a little.
