What Size Air Compressor Do I Need for My Nailers?

I'm considering getting an air compressor since I want to switch from electric nailers. I've read great things about California Air Compressors, especially regarding their noise levels. But I'm unsure about what size I should get. I'm planning to use it mainly for a brad nailer, pin nailer, and also to dust off my projects while sanding. Should I go for a 1-gallon, 2-gallon, or maybe a 6-gallon model? I'm limited to a height of about 23 inches for it to fit on my workbench, and I'd like to use that space for other tools as well. Any advice?

Based on your needs, a 2-gallon compressor would be the way to go! For brad and pin nailers, you don't need a ton of air, but a 1-gallon could end up cycling too often, which might get annoying and wear it out faster. California Air's 2-gallon models are compact and very quiet, usually sitting around 18" tall, so they'll fit nicely in your space without taking much room. I'd recommend their CAT 2010A model—it's oil-free, stays really quiet at 60 dB, and weighs about 35 lbs, making it easy to move around if needed.

I have the 4620AC, which is a 4-gallon compressor. While it might be a bit of overkill for light tasks like yours, it runs pretty quietly compared to others. It fills up fast, taking about 15-20 seconds from empty to full, which is super convenient for my setup. Depending on noise and portability, I'd say sticking with the 2-gallon could be a nice compromise between power and size.

If you're limited by height, go for something that fits while still getting a decent size. Consider what's available in your area, and remember that a larger compressor will cycle less frequently, which is a bonus. Stay away from 6-gallon models; they're overkill for what you'll be doing. A 2-gallon is really a sweet spot for nailers and dusting tools.

Thanks for the tips! Sounds like the 2-gallon might be the perfect match for what I need.

I use a Makita 2-gallon in my shop for nailers, and it works beautifully. It's compact, quiet, and doesn't take much space, easily fitting into tight areas. You might even want to check out the reviews on it—2-gallon seems to really balance capacity and convenience quite well. I had a little more capacity now and then but overall, the 2-gallon size hits the sweet spot for most jobs like nailing trim.
