Should I end my friendship because my friend didn’t water my plants?

I recently went on a ten-day work trip and left my friend, who lives nearby, with my house keys. I asked him to take care of my plants—about 20 of them— ideally watering them every other day or at least every three days. He agreed, and I even left him a gift of a book he wanted and some brownies. It's been almost six days now, and it seems he hasn't checked on them at all. I've messaged him a couple of times to see if he stopped by, but he hasn't given me a clear answer. He mentioned being sick and that it was rainy. Now I'm really worried my plants might be dead, as I usually water them daily. Should I consider ending our friendship over this?

While I get being upset, think about it—are you valuing the plants over the friendship? If he truly blew off his commitment, it’s understandable to feel hurt, but how often do we really hold friends accountable for every single thing? Maybe just re-evaluate the friendship from here on out. If it happens again, then it might be time to reconsider.

That’s a fair point! It’s more about how often he follows through in general, right?

Exactly! If it starts becoming a consistent pattern where he doesn’t follow through, then yeah, it’s time to think harder.

Honestly, I think you’re taking this too hard. Your plants probably peeped some water after all that rain! It really sucks he didn't check in with you, but friendships are often tested. Instead of ending it over this, maybe just sit down with him and talk about how you feel? It might clear some of the air.

Totally agree! Communication is key. Maybe he just needs a gentle reminder about respecting commitments.

Yes! It’s a learning moment. Just remember that your plants can be replaced, but a true friend is harder to come by.

Honestly, I think you might be overthinking the whole watering situation. Most houseplants don’t need watering every other day; some can actually go a week or more without it. It sounds like your friend might not have fully understood the commitment he made, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he doesn’t care about you. Maybe try giving him the benefit of the doubt this time?

Exactly! I have a ton of plants too, and many of them thrive with less frequent watering. It’s not an easy ask, but it happens.

Right? Plus, if he really had a cold or was dealing with bad weather, that might have hindered him. It’s worth discussing more rather than throwing the friendship away.
