Hey everyone! I just got a Shinto rasp and I'm really enjoying it after using regular woodworking rasps for a while. However, I have some doubts about how to use it, particularly with the backstroke. I've been told to always lift the rasp on the backstroke motion with other rasps to avoid dulling the blades. But since the Shinto is made of sawblades, I'm not sure if the same rule applies since we commonly keep sawblades in contact during both strokes. I've seen mixed advice in videos regarding whether to use a contact backstroke or not. I'd love to hear your thoughts so I can make sure to take good care of this new tool!

Honestly, I only worry about lifting on the backstroke when I'm using a metal file on metal. With the Shinto, it seems like the backstroke doesn't have the same risks. It's more about how you're using it rather than strict rules.
Exactly! I can't see how dragging a rasp back would dull the blades. It feels similar to pulling a rip saw back along the wood, right? That logic doesn’t quite add up.

And you can also chill about that worry too. I watched this guy do a pretty thorough test on it, and it showed that the difference is negligible. Here’s the link if you want to check it out: https://youtu.be/xbykic--SKA?si=QZ-ypOgMAGHDF5bD
