Hey everyone! I'm looking to transform my small, overlooked NNW facing garden into a peaceful retreat for myself and local wildlife. The garden has a garage wall on one side and a neighbor's wall on the other, with a 5.5 foot fence at the back which is the sunniest area. I'd appreciate any suggestions for adding privacy along the back, as well as recommendations for shade-tolerant evergreens that would work well in small spaces against walls. I'm eager to learn and get started!

Fatsia Japonica does really well in shade and looks stunning! The variegated variety is more compact than the solid green one, so it might fit perfectly in your garden. Plus, it's quite a statement plant!

I deal with a lot of shade in my yard, and I’ve filled it with all kinds of plants! Evergreens and deciduous ferns are fantastic. I also recommend winter-flowering hellebores, foxgloves, red campion, hardy cyclamen, and even woodland anemones. If you choose wisely, you can have something blooming all year long! It’s so rewarding to have a vibrant garden even in the winter months! ?

I’m a fan of Fatsia too! I think it would look nice paired with a mahonia for some color contrast.
