I'm trying to connect two 4-foot long 2x4s end to end using dowels and wood glue. How does the strength of this joint compare to a single 8-foot 2x4? Would this method hold up well, or is there a better way to do it?

The joint's strength really depends on how well you make it. If the dowels are solid and you glue everything perfectly, it should hold decently. But honestly, it won't be nearly as strong as a solid 8-foot 2x4. Expect some frustration if you're going for ultimate strength here!
I’d recommend trying a scarf joint instead. It’s a much more reliable way to connect two pieces of wood. If you can, just buy a new 2x4. It saves a lot of hassle!
Yeah, just remember to really coat those ends in glue! The end grain can soak it up and weaken the joint if you're not careful.
