I'm trying to wall mount my Hicense 55" TV but I'm facing an issue because the studs in the wall aren't spaced 16 inches apart for my mounting bracket. Someone suggested using a wooden plank attached to the studs to mount the TV. What kind of wood should I use and what thickness would be ideal? I need to head to Home Depot soon, so I'm looking for some quick tips. Thanks in advance!

What you're talking about is called a stringer and a 3/4" piece of plywood should be sufficient for your TV. Just make sure you avoid mounting directly into drywall, as it can lead to issues down the line, especially if your mount has a pull-out feature. Stick with getting that securely fastened to the studs or a good backing board!
I mounted my 55" U8 TV using a bracket that attaches to one stud instead of two, and it turned out great! I'd recommend looking for a solid bracket that can do that. If you're nervous about it being stable, you could always use a toggle bolt or two in addition to the stud. If you're feeling ambitious, opening up the wall to install a 2x6 between the studs could also give you a clean look and allow you to run power for hiding wires.
