Hey everyone! I'm in the market for a new vehicle to help me with moving lumber for my projects. So far, I've been focusing on smaller trucks like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Tacoma, but I'm having a tough time finding one that's in good shape. I'm curious to know if there are other types of vehicles that could work well for hauling lumber, particularly mid-sized SUVs or minivans. Has anyone had success using these kinds of vehicles for transporting plywood or rough cut lumber? Any specific models that you've found to be surprisingly effective?

Another option is definitely a small cargo van! If you don’t mind the size, vehicles like the Mercedes Sprinter or even a Dodge Ram Promaster can be great for hauling lumber. You have the added benefit of keeping your tools secured inside. Plus, the towing capability for these vans is actually pretty good compared to what you’d get with a standard truck, making them worth considering.

You might want to consider getting a utility trailer! I use a 5x8 trailer, and it works wonders for transporting all kinds of stuff. It's bigger than any truck bed, plus it has a built-in ramp for easy loading. You’ll just need a vehicle that can tow around 2000 pounds, which usually isn't too hard to manage. A cheap truck can be a hassle, especially with property taxes and maintenance, so a trailer might be a good way to go!
I've seen Harbor Freight trailers that are pretty affordable too and can be stored upright when not in use. Definitely a great option if you're considering trailers!

If you’re open to a minivan, I’ve got to say the Toyota Sienna is an awesome pick. There's just so much versatility in it! It’s spacious and makes moving things a breeze. I think a lot of people overestimate their need for a pickup truck. Most don't really need them and end up just taking up space for nothing. For instance, I can fit plywood in my Sienna when all the seats are folded down, and it’s way more practical day-to-day.

Exactly! I had a Honda Element before switching to a Tacoma, and while the Tacoma is nice and all, it’s just way bulkier. The Sienna lets you haul all sorts of stuff without worrying about scratching the interior.
