I'm just getting into gardening and have set up a few potted flowers along with an above-ground garden. However, I've spotted some tiny mites on my potted plants and I'm not sure if they're harmful or not. I'm really nervous about insects but want to embrace the gardening journey! Can anyone tell me what pests I might encounter? Which ones are good, neutral, or bad? Also, are there certain pests that can cause serious issues, forcing me to toss out my plants or dig up my garden? Thanks for any help!

Don't stress too much about bugs! Most of them are actually beneficial for your plants. You only really need to keep an eye out for aggressive pests like certain wasps or destructive beetles. Wasps can be a nuisance, and beetles can quickly multiply and damage your plants, but other bugs usually do more good than harm. Just keep observing and you'll get the hang of it!
There are loads of critters in garden soil, but it's usually not a big deal. Tiny mites like aphids tend to hang out on the plants rather than in the soil. Unless it's something super drastic like a massive ant colony, I wouldn't worry too much. Generally, having living things in your soil is a positive sign!
