Why Is Everyone So Focused on “Character” in Home Design?

I recently helped my parents design our new primary residence and their vacation home, plus I renovated an older townhouse for myself. My family prefers contemporary minimalist design due to our Nordic heritage, and we've stuck with that style. I shared photos of our projects on Instagram, but the feedback was mixed. Many people called the new houses 'boring white boxes'—which isn't even accurate—and criticized the interiors for being 'lifeless, sterile, cold, and unlivable,' often repeating that they had 'no character.'

When I renovated the townhouse, the backlash was even harsher, with comments about how I 'destroyed the character' of the place. I'm left wondering: Why this obsession with a home's 'character'? What does it really mean? Is it worth sacrificing comfort or livability for the sake of preserving something considered 'character'? Are people simply equating character with outdated or excessive decor?

Honestly, it seems like minimalist design has been getting some backlash lately. Many people view 'character' as features that exhibit craftsmanship, like hardwood flooring or intricate woodwork. Now, it often feels like a catch-all for any dislike someone has towards a design style. You might just be seeing a reaction to changing trends!

I think everyone is entitled to their opinions on home design! Your minimalist approach serves function above all. People who criticize may just have a different vision for what 'character' means, and that's fine. If they’re overly harsh, it might say more about them than your design choices.

To me, 'character' suggests those unique touches that make a space feel lived-in. It could be personal items, plants, or softer textures that make a home feel warm. If your space feels cozy and reflects who you are, I think that’s successful design, regardless of the so-called trends!

If your townhouse was built in 1900 and had many updates over the years, it’s clear that design trends have shifted a lot. If you tore out original features like hardwood trim, that's one thing, but if it's a modernized version, then it’s all about personal taste. People may be protective of the history tied to those older homes.

Exactly! A lot of older homes have charm, but renovations can bring them into the present while keeping what matters. It's all about creating a livable space that reflects personal style!
