Feeling Like I Need to Work Twice as Hard as My Male Coworkers – Am I Overthinking?

Asked By SunnyBunny92 On

I'm a female landscaper working weekends for my boyfriend, who's also my boss. I put in a lot of effort, don't take breaks unless I'm told to, and generally keep my head down to focus on my work. However, I feel the pressure to outperform my male coworkers to justify my presence on the team. It seems like they get more recognition and are able to joke around, while I just grind. I'm not sure if this need to overperform is coming from me or if there's something more to it. I also worry that not having the same casual interactions makes me miss out on camaraderie. Is this a personal issue I'm creating, or is it a real concern in my work environment?

It’s tough because, naturally, women may have to work harder physically in some jobs due to size differences. But remember, everyone's effort shines through, and you should feel proud of what you’re accomplishing. Don’t let the lack of casual chats get in your head too much; keep pushing, and recognize your hard work—everyone sees it.

Exactly! They’re bound to notice. Just keep doing your best, and eventually those good vibes will come your way!

I think you might be putting undue pressure on yourself. Women often feel the need to prove themselves more in male-dominated fields, but that can lead to burnout. Try to remember that working hard doesn’t mean you have to lose your personality at work. Don’t hesitate to be yourself and communicate; it might just help you fit in better over time!

That's so true. Just remember, they do see your effort, and being friendly can help break the ice. Sometimes just reaching out first can change the whole vibe!

It sounds like you're really dedicated, and it's totally valid to feel frustrated about not getting the same recognition as your male peers. The dynamic can be tough, especially since your boyfriend is also the boss. Maybe you should bring up your hard work with him behind the scenes? A little acknowledgment could boost your confidence.

Definitely! A simple 'Hey, I'm really putting in a lot of effort, and it would mean a lot to get some feedback' can go a long way.
