I'm curious if anyone else is doing this or if it's just me being a total noob. I always keep one hand on the vacuum hose and the other on my random orbital sander when I work. Is this a smart approach, or am I making a rookie mistake?

You know, if you're having issues with the hose coming loose, investing in some good hose clamps that you can tighten by hand might really help. I've found that having the hose stable can also help keep the sander flat while you're working.
Oh man, I feel you! I have a Rockler hose, and it's so heavy that it tends to drag and sometimes pulls the sander off. I keep thinking about rigging a hanging point from the ceiling to suspend the hose, so I can finally use both hands for sanding. But for now, holding the hose is a must for even sanding.
You're definitely not alone! I have to do the same thing with my Ryobi sander because the hose slips off way too easily. It's super annoying, but I find that keeping one hand on the hose helps me maintain control and keeps the sander flat against the surface.
