I'm on the hunt for some hand planes without breaking the bank. I've got a Footprint #4, which is fine, but I'm hoping to add a decent block plane, a #5, and either a #6 or #7 to my toolkit. The problem is, everything I find locally is either overpriced or in poor condition. For instance, a decent used #6 or #7 can cost around $200 CAD, and #5s usually go for over $130, which feels a bit steep. I see plenty of #3 and #4 planes going for about $50, but I'm wondering if my expectations are too high. Do I really need to shell out $500+ for a couple of good planes?
