What Should I Do with All This Gravel?

I'm stuck with a ton of gravel that the previous owners left behind, and I really want to transform my side yard, which is currently overrun with weeds. Initially, I thought about just getting rid of it, but I realized that it could be useful for creating a pathway with narrow planting beds on the side. I don't want to use plastic under the gravel because I'm concerned about microplastics leaching into the soil, even though I'm not planting edibles there. I've tried using cardboard before, but it never stays flat, and I'm worried it won't last long. So, am I totally out of luck? Should I just ditch the gravel and buy wood chips instead, or is there a way to make this work without going over budget?

Why not try layering cardboard beneath your gravel? It might actually help keep the weeds down if the gravel's heavy enough to keep it flat. I think it could be a great solution to your problem!

I think that's what we're going to do! My husband thinks the gravel should keep the cardboard in place better than wood chips would.

Honestly, I find gravel pretty easy to manage when it comes to weeds. If you're looking for a way to handle them, you might want to try using a flame weeder. A little fire can take care of those pesky plants without damaging the gravel! Though, I get it, trying to wrangle a toddler while weeding isn't easy. It's definitely a challenge!

Haha, I’d prefer not to have to weed at all! With a toddler around, hand weeding is basically impossible.

Have you considered using wood chip mulch? You can just spread it right over the gravel to smother the weeds. It eventually breaks down and enriches the soil. Plus, you can use the gravel for drainage where it won't be visible. Just keep topping it with mulch and you’ll help out the soil without having to remove the gravel!

Wow, that sounds genius! I didn't even think of smothering with mulch. I can just shift some gravel aside for planting, and the wood chips could solve my weeding nightmare!
