Hey folks! I'm living in the SF Bay Area and my central HVAC system is getting pretty old. I recently got a quote for a mini split replacement, which includes 6 units that would cover about 1500 square feet, and the total came to a whopping $45k. I checked out the cost of a similar Gree mini split system at Home Depot, which is about $8k for 5 units, so I estimate around $10k for 6. I asked the HVAC company to break down the costs for materials and labor, but they said they couldn't do that. Honestly, I'm having a hard time justifying $35k for labor on this install. What have your experiences been, and what did it cost you to replace your HVAC?

Honestly, if you have central heating and cooling, it might be better to stick with that system. Mini splits can be less cost effective and less efficient compared to a properly sized air handler. $45k isn't unreasonable if you consider the installation complexity and materials needed for 6 separate units—especially in a place like the Bay Area.
Replacing it all with a central heat pump system could save you a ton of money—probably more than half the cost you're looking at! Definitely worth exploring that route before making a decision.
