What’s the best way to deal with chipping paint on old trim?

I live in an old house, and I'm facing a problem with paint chipping off the wood trim, baseboards, and door frames, while the walls seem to be in better shape. It looks like there are multiple layers of paint, including a purple and an orange layer beneath the visible one. I'm considering doing some touch-ups. Should I strip all the old paint off completely, starting over with stripping, priming, and repainting? Or would it be sufficient to just sand it down a bit and then repaint it?

I recommend taking off any loose paint first, using a razor scraper or something similar. After that, give it a good sanding to help the new paint stick better. Don’t forget to prime before you repaint!

Just a heads up, if your house was built in 1900, the old paint could have lead in it, so be sure to wear a mask when you're working on it! It's better to be safe.

Okay thanks for letting me know! The house was built in 1900 so that’s def a possibility.

Sounds like they might have used latex paint over oil-based trim paint, which can cause adhesion issues. Using a carbide paint scraper should help remove that top layer easily. After that, just prep it well and repaint.
